Oonagh O’Hagan, owner and MD of Meaghers Pharmacy Group and Symprove Ireland, wants to raise awareness about gut health on World Microbiome Day, which takes place next week (Thursday, June 27th).
Oonagh, who has had issues in the past with her own gut health, wants to encourage customers to embark on a potentially life-changing journey to improve their gut health.
She is sharing her top seven tips to reduce bloating and support gut health which include taking herbal bitters, getting a massage as well as avoiding chewing gum and fizzy drinks. See below in notes for full list.
World Microbiome Day on Thursday, June 27, aims to raise awareness of the importance of gut health and the role that an unbalanced microbiome can play in debilitating conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and bloating.
Meaghers Pharmacy is celebrating World Microbiome Day by offering Meaghers customers special offers on Symprove.
Symprove is a water-based food supplement containing four strains of live and active bacteria. It is scientifically proven to restore the balance of good bacteria to the microbiome, the term used to describe the ecosystem of bacteria in our digestive tract.
Meaghers is offering 20% off Symprove 4 and 12 week supplies, both in-store and online all next week from Monday, June 24 until Sunday, June 30. There will also be a free Symprove shot glass with the purchase of a 12-week programme while stocks last.
Free tastings of Symprove are also available at Meaghers Pharmacy’s ten outlets across Dublin during the week.
Meaghers Pharmacy Group owner and MD Oonagh O’Hagan says:
“World Microbiome Day is a great opportunity to be educated on the microbiome and what it is, and how important gut health is to our overall wellbeing. A healthy gut microbiome supports many areas of our health including digestive, metabolic, mental health and immunity. A healthy microbiome has many health benefits – including easing IBS and reducing bloating. I’ve suffered from IBS since I was a teenager so I not only know how it can affect people but also how Symprove can help manage the symptoms.
“But IBS isn’t the only reason why people experience bloating. It can be from overeating, eating too quickly, constipation, eating too many carbs or suffering from food intolerances. Surprisingly, anxiety is also one of the primary causes of bloating.
“I hope my tips and this offer of 20% off Symprove will help motivate people struggling with IBS, bloating and other stomach ailments to take action that will ease their suffering and could potentially change their lives.”
In 2014, Meaghers Pharmacy Group was the first Irish stockist of Symprove after Oonagh O’Hagan successfully used the product to manage her own symptoms of IBS. She now aims to bring Symprove to as many people in Ireland who suffer with poor gut health, so that they too can have the opportunity to experience some of its many benefits.
Oonagh’s top tips to reduce bloating and improve your gut health
Get some light exercise
Breaking a sweat can help you naturally get rid of gas. Incorporating gentle movements such as stretching and walking will help your blood flow more efficiently and prevent water retention in the body.
Take herbal bitters
Using preserved medicinal herbs and botanicals can soothe a bloated stomach. The most reliable medicinal bitters include yellow dock, dandelion, gentian root, artichoke, angelica and burdock. Bear in mind that alternative medicine doesn’t work for everyone.
Get a massage
Instead of your usual back or head massage, try and belly massage. A gentle stomach massage can help with bowel function. But it needs to be done right for it to work!
Try a Probiotic Supplement
People with a healthy gut rarely experience gas or bloating. Food supplements – such as Symprove – can help maintain a healthy gut by introducing beneficial nutrients into the intestines. Symprove is a unique water-based food supplement that contains four strains of live and active bacteria. The bacteria are delivered to the gut to support the microbiome. By balancing the gut microbiome, you will reduce bloating and gas production.
Swap soft drinks for water
This sounds like an easy win but that’s because it is! Most fizzy drinks cause gas build up in the stomach. Replacing them with water can eliminate cases of bloating. It also helps treat and prevent constipation, which is a major cause of bloating.
Avoid chewing gum
Most people who regularly use chewing gum will have to deal with bloating. The contents of chewing gum causes bloating as does swallowing air while chewing. Swap for peppermints or ginger mints instead.
Increase your fibre intake
Eating foods rich in fibre is a good way to prevent constipation and bloating. But make sure you introduce more fibre in a moderate way so your body can adjust to the increase in bulk – or you will experience more bloating!
