Dave Guilfoyle has over 30 years’ experience as a colour specialist and educator and has worked with a myriad of different brands during that time. We sat down to find out a little more about the guy that has spent 25 years behind the chair in Paul Street and how his new home in Parnell Place is exciting but really all about creating great hair still.
“I have been hairdressing since I lived in Dublin over 30 years ago and I worked with Mark, of Peter Mark fame in Grafton Street. We had a very varied clientele but as the business grew we amassed a lot of what would now be considered celebrity clients; actors from the theatre, presenters from RTÉ and socialites.
“Colouring has always been my passion and I followed that passion to Cork with Wella to become their educator here in Cork. Once I settled here and had a family, I knew that this is where I belonged and haven’t left since. I have worked with brands such as Wella, L’Oreal and Schwarzkopf and more recently Alfaparf and this Italian brand has really renewed my fervour for colour once again.
“In terms of looks I tend to love the more classic looks. Trends come and go, but beautiful hair? That is timeless. There is a lot to be said for having a ‘coloured natural look’ to hair. Of course, I am happy to work with newer trends too like ombre and balayage techniques and over the years various colour trends come and go.
“Colouring the hair is a science and although many colourists’ techniques vary, the science, that remains consistent. The secret to delivering great colour is all about the science part, and although rules can be bent they should never be broken. Social media has created this false ideology that we can dramatically transform the hair in one sitting. This isn’t always the case and it is important to manage the client’s expectations. Irrespective how much money someone spends you cannot side step the process if you want to keep hair healthy and this should always be the goal. That is why a consultation is so important. They are free, and we can always have a chat about different tones or products.
“Great hair is something that comes with regular trims, professional colouring and excellent take-home products. Your hair is an investment and how you treat it at home is very important.”
