We are delighted to announce that we have just installed five wheelchair swings in five different Parks across the City in the past two weeks;
- Clashduv Park, Togher
- Ballinlough Park, Nursery Drive
- Pophams Park, Farranree
- Meelick Park, Ballyvolane
- Blarney Park, Blarney.
Each swing, costing over € 20k, allows the wheelchair user to enjoy use of the swing whilst in their chair. The swings are located within existing playgrounds, and always prove to be one of the most popular play items for children.
The Irish Wheelchair Association very much welcomes the initiative , and the reaction from wheelchair users has been extremely positive .
Access to the units is gated, as the swing motion from the cradle could impact on someone who was unfamiliar with its operation. A universal key to access all units is available from the Parks & Recreation Department by e mailing recreation@corkcity.ie, or by phoning ( 021) 4924000.
Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Tony Fitzgerald says that “ the Council is very pleased to provide additional play opportunities for wheelchair users across a number of Parks in the City and is very appreciative of the response from users and parents to date”
We would hope to install further swings as funding becomes available.
