This year marks the 30th anniversary of Barretstown, a charity founded by actor Paul Newman in 1994 which provides therapeutic camps and programmes for children affected by cancer and other serious illnesses. To celebrate this important milestone and raise much-needed funds to provide these essential services to children and families free of charge, the charity held its Horse Racing Summer Season Luncheon.
This extraordinary afternoon, hosted by television presenter Glenda Gilson, kicked off with a Roku Gin reception accompanied by the music of Manila Strings before guests sat down to a delicious three-course lunch with wines sponsored by Irish Distillers. The ‘Style for the Season’ fashion show by Kildare Village followed, providing guests with inspiration on the latest trends and how to wear them, while a raffle and silent auction had everyone crossing their fingers for a few extra treats to take home.

An intriguing panel discussion then took place where horse trainer Lorna Fowler of Rahinston Farm & Stud in Co Meath caught up with renowned Irish horse trainer Jessica Harrington, New York and Irish based philanthropist and celebrated racehorse owner Eleanora Kennedy, and retired Irish jockey turned TV Presenter Fran Berry, who all shared fascinating tales about their lives and careers along with thoughts on the 2024 summer racing calendar. Finally, tenor Paul Byrom entertained guests after dessert was served, providing the perfect finish to an elegant afternoon.
It was a fitting celebration of one of Ireland’s most beloved charities and raised €60,000 to help Barretstown continue to support children affected by cancer and other serious illnesses in 2024 and beyond. Guests on the day included Jessica Harrington, Keith & Mairead Barry, Gillian Quinn, Lucy Nagle, Keria & Dairine Kennedy, Jess Colivet to name but a few.
