A snapshot of today buried in Cabra Castle time capsule.
Future generations at Cabra Castle in County Cavan will be able to get a unique glimpse and taste of life in 2019. To mark the completion of the final phase of its €6m redevelopment project, the owners and staff at the famous Cabra Castle have today, buried a time capsule.
During the renovations, Cabra Castle staff discussed how intriguing it would be to discover something from the castle’s ancient history while digging on the grounds. “This sparked the idea of burying a time capsule in the castle for future generations to discover”, Howard Corscadden Managing Director of Cabra Castle explained.
The staff at Cabra Castle helped contribute to the castle’s time capsule and items included; a bottle of Tullamore Dew 12-year old Special Reserve Irish Whiskey, newspaper clippings, a handwritten recipe from Executive Chef Claire McEntegart, family photographs, the lyrics of Irish music, a personal handwritten letter from Mitzie Corscadden, the family matriarch and a long-standing veteran of the Irish hotel industry, and a picture of Cabra Castle’s own Irish Wolfhound Oscar VI, who is nearly as famous as the castle itself.
Howard added, “We thought it was important to mark the final phase of this 5-year project by celebrating the castles great history and crystallising people’s memories of Cabra Castle”.

Cabra Castle’s impressive €6m redevelopment includes the refurbishment of its 105 bedrooms, including 2 luxury bridal suites. ‘The Galleria Veranda’ has been extended to create a larger outdoor entertainment area with an outdoor cinema for guests to enjoy. The extension of ‘The Gallerie Veranda’, has allowed for a new private entertainment room, ‘The Garden Room’ to be created overlooking ‘Mitzie’s Garden’.
The redevelopment also included the redesign of ‘The Terrace Room’ layout, which has been thoughtfully reworked, to create a more distinct and functional space for private parties and guests alike to enjoy. The newly redesigned Terrace Room, includes a cosy bar that leads out to a private BBQ area with substantial seating options that can be reconfigured to a guest’s preference.
Howard concluded by saying “We are delighted that works are near completion on this 5-year redevelopment project. It was important to us to preserve the history of Cabra Castle, yet ensure that we could offer weddings, events and guests all the modern facilities that they have come to expect from a 4-star luxury castle property today”.
Certainly, we think a trip to Cavan is on the cards soon – if only just to try and catch a glimpse of Oscar VI!
